FAQs

Who runs the sale?+

The sale is run entirely by volunteers from the Shelford School PTA (registered charity 1110813). As a volunteer run enterprise we appreciate your help and patience as we process all of the bikes, payments etc in our spare time. All profits go directly to supporting the school. Since the early 2000s the sale has raised over £15,000 and recycled more than 1,000 bikes.

When and where is the next sale?+

We typically run one or two sales per year, with our primary sale almost always in late summer/early autumn. If we have enough energy there might be another sale in the spring. We will advertise each sale a month or so before.

How do I sell my bike through the sale?+

In the run up to the sale, when we’re accepting bikes, you will be able to fill in the submission form on this website. You’ll get a confirmation email with your bike’s stock number, then email us at shelford.bike.sale@gmail.com to arrange dropping the bike off. We give all bikes a health check, make minor repairs, display it on sale day, and handle the sale for you.

How much of the sale price goes to the PTA?+

Your choice: the PTA keeps 30% commission (you receive 70%), or you can donate the full sale price to the school. Either way, every sale supports the school.

How is the price decided?+

You can set an asking price if you have a good sense of your bike’s value, otherwise leave it to us and our experienced team will price it to sell well. You can also set a reserve, the minimum you’d accept, which lets us negotiate on the day without going below your floor. Most sellers leave the reserve at £0 to give us full flexibility — we won’t give your bike away!

What happens if my bike doesn’t sell?+

Your choice when you submit: we can have it ready for you to collect after the sale, or we can store it and enter it into the next one. Note that if we store the bike we cannot access it between sales, so please think carefully about this option.

How and when do I get paid?+

When your bike sells you’ll receive an email confirming the sale price and what you’re owed. Reply with your bank details and we’ll transfer the money within a week of the sale.

Do you make sure the bikes aren’t stolen?+

We are a local event and the majority of our bikes are sold by families associated with the village or the school. Regardless, we check frame numbers against the BikeRegister database for high value bikes. All of our bikes are traceable to the seller, whom affirms the bike is theirs before selling. If you believe a bike offered at our sale is stolen, contact us and we’ll cooperate fully with the police.

What condition should a bike be in?+

Roadworthy and reasonably clean. We give all bikes a health check and can make minor repairs, however we can’t accept bikes needing major repair, but we may accept them as donations for parts. If we think your bike is not economically viable for us to repair & sell then we will ask you to collect the bike.

How do I pay on sale day?+

We can take card and cash payments. All sales are final on the day.

Do you offer refunds or a warranty on bikes bought at the sale?+

No — all bikes are sold as seen, on behalf of their owners, and all proceeds support the school. Please check the bike over, assess the health check results and take a test ride before buying.

Can I just donate a bike?+

Yes please! Submit it like any other bike and choose to donate 100% to the PTA. Outgrown kids’ bikes are our bestsellers. Please don’t donate bikes that are obviously at their end of life — we are not a disposal service.

What do you do with my personal details?+

We use them only to run the sale, and we delete personal details within 12 months of your bike’s sale. Full details are in the privacy notice on the submission form; contact us any time to access or delete your data.

How do I contact you?+
